Temporary Dialysis/Plasmaphoresis Catheter - General Placement

If a patient requires short term dialysis therapy, a temporary dialysis will be inserted. This is a non tunnelled catheter that is placed in the internal jugular vein but is not tunnelled under the skin. These catheters usually need to be removed or replaced within 7-10 days to reduce the risk of infection.

A temporary plasmaphoresis catheter is placed for short term plasmaphoresis therapy and is placed in the same manner as the temporary dialysis catheter.
